Is it Better to Sit or Stand While Eating?



Did you know standing up while eating can throw off the signals in your brain to tell you when you're full and screw with your digestion??

Digestion is a process dominated by our parasympathetic nervous system, which has the famous tagline “rest and digest”—your body needs to be relaxed in order to process food efficiently. It also messes with the way our brain signals our stomachs that we're full.

Since we are always aiming to slow the rate at which food leaves our stomach so we stay full with nutrient-rich foods such as lean meats, fruits & veggies (except during exercise) in order to maximize satiety and boost the absorption of the nutrients in your food, sitting wins over standing in this situation.

I know I know, I can be guilty of the "grab and run" or eating while getting ready to go somewhere but give yourself a break. ENJOY your food. Sit down, turn off all distractions, slow DOWN...don't eat so fast, and just ENJOY it...got it?? :)

Our ancestors definitely had a plan when they made sure we sit on the floor, cross legged and ate our food.

Here are some reasons why sitting is best preferred while eating is best for your health.

While concentrating on every aspect of the food – its smell, taste, texture and how much you are eating is the key to losing weight – which is what sitting on the floor and eating gives you

Posture is very important when it comes to staying healthy. Good posture not only helps prevent injuries but it also reduces the chances of excessive strain on certain muscles and joints



4. Lubricates and keeps your knees and hip joint healthy


5. Strengthens the heart by improving circulation




So is it better to eat sitting, standing or lying down?

 While there is not enough scientific evidence to confidently state that eating in either position is more appropriate, it’s likely that as long as you take your time and eat mindfully.


Either standing or sitting to eat your meals should be absolutely fine and a healthier alternative to eating lying down.
